PROLOGUE Judea, 460 B.C.

Am I adding to the chaos of the world?
Am I part of the problem,
or the solution?

MADONNA

The desert winds buffeted the tent mercilessly in the storm, snapping the
loose skins against each other. Inside, the old shepherd lay in the dim light,
his body wracked with fever, his face twisted in agony
“Water, more water …!” the barely audible voice groaned.
He drank painfully from the bowl raised to his lips.
Abihail felt life once again coursing through his veins, as he negotiated with
death, knowing he had gained perhaps a short hour more.
Too weak to face the elements, his own torments or his fate, the old man felt
emotion well up from within.
The moment his eyes closed, the angelic face of Esther appeared before him,
his beloved daughter, long since given over to the care of others, when her
mother died. Esther! His Esther, whose childhood he had never seen, who
long ago had renounced her father, her people, and her God, and was living
among the heathen.
Abihail had lived his entire life in the hopes of seeing a better tomorrow.
Today, he knew all too well, would have no tomorrow, not for him.
“Water, more water…” groaned the gravelly voice again.
The long hair, disheveled and clinging to his face with sweat, was gently
swept aside by a hand that tenderly helped him swallow a small sip. With the
knowledge that it was perhaps his last, he swallowed, gratefully.
Abihail was devoured by remorse, haunted relentlessly by the unbearable
images of his half clad daughter dancing before strangers.
With an inhuman effort, he opened his eyes again.
“Water! Water!”
Eyes closed, his face momentarily darkened and twitched, as a violent gust of
wind shook the tent. The sand storm was gathering strength, becoming
more and more aggressive in the night. The soft glow of a pale light
illuminated the tent, as his wife Myriam, dead for over twelve years, appeared
at the foot of his bed. Young and beautiful, she smiled benevolently and
spoke to him tenderly.
“Abi, calm yourself” the distant voice said, softly. “Accept His Will.
Accept the Will of the angels… Your guilt is no greater than mine. I am here
to bring you peace.”
Outside, the storm suddenly ceased.
Abihail understood that he would be thirsty no more. With a last shiver, his
life coursed through his old body and then, all was still.
The wind was calm at last.
The old shepherd was dead.
Inside the tent, Abihail looked down curiously at his own body. Detached, he
observed the form he had inhabited, the human shell that he had been.
The eerie sound of wails of sadness from the mourners mingled with another
distant sound, the sound of life and laughter of young women. Now he was
at the far end of the desert, in Susa, where the concubines were splashing in
the royal pools of the palace of King Ahasuerus. Abihail recognized Esther
among them, and from above, he could see her and approach her. He
reached out to touch her. Esther could not see him.
“Esther, Esther!”
Esther still could not hear him… Moved by a sudden impulse, he whispered in
her ear:
“My daughter, from the kingdom of the dead, from the night of time, I
will return! I swear to you before God.
Showing no signs of hearing, Esther continued to bathe her long hair. She
paused for a short moment, feeling suddenly cool.
Who could have foreseen that Esther would one day reign over a hundred and
twenty-seven provinces, from India to the lands of the Kush? That she would
be remembered forever for saving her people? That this lost child of Israel,
deaf to the voice of her father, would be celebrated and feasted for millennia
by millions of people each year?
As he felt himself transported through a long luminous tunnel, in the distance
Abihail heard the Prayer for the Dead, the Kaddish:
Yit’gadal v’yit’kadash sh’mei raba…
May His Great Name be exalted and sanctified
May His Great Name be blessed for always and all time
Throughout the world He has created according to His Will
And may His Kingdom be established
In our lifetime and in our days
For us and for all the families of Israel

May the divine laws swiftly and soon become reality
May He who caused peace to reign in the heavens
Let this peace descend among us
And over all the House of Israel
Amen.
